Common AC Problems: Why Is My AC Not Turning On?

Summer is in full swing and that means one thing: it’s hot outside! If you’re like most people, you’re probably running your AC nonstop to stay cool. But what do you do when your AC stops working? Don’t worry, we’re here to help. In this article, we will discuss some common AC problems and how to fix them. So, if your AC is not turning on, keep reading!

There could be a number of reasons why your AC unit isn’t turning on, but don’t despair! We’ve enumerated and elaborated the seven most common issues below.

Issue #1: Check Your Circuit Breaker

Check to see if the circuit breaker has been tripped if the air conditioning unit in your home is plugged into an outlet. This is a fairly common problem that is simple to resolve; all you need to do is turn the switch back on, and you should be good to go.

Issue #2: Replace Your Filter

One of the most typical causes of a malfunctioning air conditioning unit is a filter that is obstructed with debris. Blocking the flow of air and putting strain on the system is what happens when dirt and dust accumulate on the filter. Because of this, your air conditioner has to work harder to move the air around, which can result in a variety of problems, including the unit completely shutting down. It is a simple and inexpensive fix that could save you a lot of headaches (and money) in the long run if you make sure to replace your filter every few months. To prevent this from happening to you, make sure to replace it at regular intervals.

Issue #3: Check Your Thermostat

It is impossible for your air conditioner to turn on if the thermostat is set to “Off” or “Fan.” Make sure that the temperature is set to “Cool” by going into the settings and checking them twice; this should get your unit up and running in no time!

Issue #4: Clean Your Condenser Coils

If your condenser coils are dirty, it will prevent heat from being released properly to the outside, which will cause your air conditioning unit to work harder than necessary (and using up more energy in the process). Simply removing your coils, rinsing them with water, and then making sure they are completely dry before replacing them is all that is required to keep them clean.

Issue #5: Check for Ice

If you observe ice forming on your air conditioning unit, this is an indication that there is a problem. This typically occurs when there is insufficient airflow through the system, which results in the evaporator coils becoming too cold. Turning off your air conditioner and waiting for the ice to melt is the typical and simple solution to the problem. After it has melted, you will need to check for any obstructions, such as a dirty filter, and clear them away so that airflow is not restricted.

Issue #6: Inspect Your Ductwork

Your air conditioning unit may be forced to work harder than necessary if the ductwork that it uses is leaking or otherwise damaged. If you have any reason to believe that there is a problem with the ductwork in your home, you should have a trained professional conduct an inspection. They will be able to repair any damage or patch up any holes, ensuring that your air conditioning unit is operating as effectively as it possibly can.

Issue #7: Call a Professional

If you have tried all of the aforementioned things, but your air conditioning unit is still not functioning properly, it is time to call in the experts. They will be able to make an accurate diagnosis and quickly restore functionality to your air conditioning unit.
