About The City Of Tracy, California

Tracy is the second most populous city in the United States’ San Joaquin County. At the time of the 2020 census, the population was 93,000. Interstate 205 runs through the city on the north side, Interstate 5 to the east, and Interstate 580 to the southwest, forming a geographic triangle.

The land on which Tracy is situated has been cut over at least once for grapevines, likely since the turn of the century. In 1857 French winemakers from France’s southeastern region were recruited by Colonel Charles Vignes to make wine in California. He brought along many French winemakers to train Californians how to grow grapes and make wine in this area, particularly around Stockton where there was a large supply of water for irrigation. Wine production flourished in the region until phylloxera hit Europe in 1863 and spread through California vineyards, especially in the San Joaquin Valley, destroying many of the grapevines. During this period many winemakers left and returned to France.
