It all started in January 2006, when Lisa and Lothar Maier bought a 20-acre vineyard on Kalthoff Commons in the Livermore Valley’s southwest corner. They agreed at that point that the current vineyard did not meet their expectations. They pulled the current vines and tilled the soil that year in order to crack the hardpan barrier underneath the surface of this field. They then planted small parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Tempranillo, Barbera, Petite Sirah, and Chardonnay in clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Tempranillo, Barbera, Petite Sirah, and Chardonnay.
